How to set up Claude Cowork on Mac or Windows

Claude Cowork turns Claude's desktop app into an agent that works inside a folder. The safe setup, the plan you need, and the Linux catch.

George Tsimpilis·augmented by AI·June 13, 2026·Anthropic

Claude Cowork is Anthropic's agentic mode built into the Claude desktop app: you point it at a folder, describe the outcome you want, and it plans the work, runs it, and hands back finished files — sorting a chaotic directory, turning a folder of notes into a report, reconciling a stack of spreadsheets. It went generally available on April 9, 2026. Unlike a self-hosted assistant like OpenClaw, there's nothing to compile and no API key to wire up — Cowork runs on the Claude subscription you already have, inside a sandboxed VM isolated from the rest of your machine.

One catch up front: Cowork is macOS and Windows only. There's no Linux build, because Anthropic's desktop app doesn't ship for Linux — if that's your machine, reach for Claude Code (the CLI) or a self-hosted agent instead. You'll also need a paid plan. Pro ($20/mo) works but throttles quickly on agent-scale tasks; Max ($100 or $200/mo) is the realistic tier if you'll lean on it, since each agent run burns through your usage allowance fast.

The setup itself takes a few minutes:

  1. Download the Claude desktop app from claude.com/download and sign in.
  2. Open it and select the Cowork tab, next to Chat.
  3. Click Work in a folder and choose a directory — start with something low-stakes like Downloads or a dedicated project folder, never your home directory.
  4. Describe the task in plain language. Cowork shows a step-by-step plan before it touches anything; read it, then click Start.
  5. Watch progress in the side panel — you can pause or steer mid-task, and it asks before any large change.

The thing people skip is scope. Cowork can rename, move, and delete files at machine speed, so back up first and keep its folder access narrow until you trust it on real work — widen it later, not on day one. On cost, remember it spends your subscription's usage limits rather than a metered API bill, so Pro users hit rate limits sooner than they expect. Max resets every five hours, and Anthropic has temporarily doubled that limit through July 5, 2026 — a good window to put it through its paces.

Want an agent wired into your actual workflow — the right folders, the right guardrails, on the right plan? That's a service we run.
